Murray V. Stookey was born Nov 16, 1939 in Wilbur, WA. He died at home March 4, 2022 in Meridian, Idaho.
Murray was raised in Baker OR where he met Dona his high school sweetheart and future wife of 61 years. He joined the military and served in Korea and Vietnam. He distinguished himself by meritorious achievement while participating in sustained aerial flight support of combat ground forces flying the Huey in Vietnam. He then returned to begin a family and conduct a life of many achievements. He began his career as a commercial airline pilot and ultimately retired as a Delta Airlines Captain.
He accomplished so much in his lifetime. He was a soldier, lifetime husband, our dad, built the beautiful Enumclaw home & barns with his own hands, a horseman, hunter, fisherman, rodeo director, a farmer, a pilot, owned R Bar S Western Store, sports dad, water skier, snow skier, Deacon at our church, a runner, climbed Mt Rainer, investor, vacationed in Africa & Australia in style, and never missed his sons football games or his daughters horse shows.
Murray loved the mountains. From horseback backcountry riding to fishing the rivers of Alaska at his cabin there. An avid hunter, he loved the hunting trips with his son to Montana and elk camp in Idaho.
A good & humble man, a teaching father, he had his God, enjoyed people, & had a joke or comment of laughter always… he was a true hero to us all.
He lived his life with grand positivity, relentless perseverance and determination, he never complained, he never gave up, he always did his best, and was always looking forward. He lived his life with no regrets.
He is survived by his wife Dona, son Dane & wife Ann, daughter Marna & husband Brian. Seven grandchildren; Jessica, Daniel, Erika & husband Austyn, Jamie, Marissa & fiancé’ Caleb, Ben, & Nicholas. Brother Merle and wife Debbie. One great-granddaughter and six nieces and nephews.
Murray is predeceased by his parents Marion & Helen Stookey of Baker OR, mother Alberta (Birdie) Parks of Alaska, & brother Monte Stookey of Heppner OR.
A Military Funeral Honors service will be held 2 pm Friday April 1, 2022 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery.
10100 N Horseshoe Bend Rd, Boise, ID 83714. Ashes will be placed in the Military Honors Columbarium Wall, also spread by his son among the Situk river in Yakutat Alaska, and placed in a remembrance locket for his daughter.
A very special thank you to Murrays family members, grandchildren, and their spouses. Regardless of working around schedules and long travel distances- Murray was surrounded by family with help in care, love, prayer and laughter throughout his last weeks. Also the staff at Horizon Hospice gave Dad the best and most loving care, they will have our eternal gratitude.
